100 Black Men of Syracuse, in conjunction with Junior Frontiers of the Mohawk Valley, continues on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 its annual free, two-part seminar series on preparing for college. “The When, What & How of Financing College Education” will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the South Side Innovation Center, 2016 S. Salina St. in Syracuse. The seminar will cover the three primary types of financial aid and their sources of revenue.
Seminar presenters will cover the various ways of applying for financial aid and the time elements involved with each one. The seminar will provide an in-depth look at the primary tool used by colleges to determine financial aid, which is called the FAFSFA form and when and how it should be filled completed. The underlined basis for how the FAFSFA works and how to best situate your family finances in order to obtain the maximum financial aid award will also be discussed. The seminar, which is intended to help parents and students understand the strategies necessary to secure funds for private and public colleges, will provide information on public and private scholarships, loans and grants, as well as best practices for their usage. An in-depth review of New York State’s HEOP/EOP programs will also be included. Finally, the seminar will provide information and discussion on the issues concerning just how much debt students and their families should assume to cover college costs and the relationship between cost and the value of a college degree.
Students from 8th grade through 12th grade and their PARENTS are strongly encouraged to attend. Although admission is free, students and parents should register online for the seminar. Each registrant should print out a ticket and bring it to the seminar.
