The numbers for 2023 aren’t in yet. However, 2022 data showed a consistently high rate of childhood lead poisoning in Syracuse neighborhoods. That said, even with all the dangerous health consequence of lead poisoning, particularly for kids, it is the nation’s number one preventable, environmental health problem facing our children today. Thus, it’s critical to more accurately determine what children are being poisoned to take steps to protect them.

Our current goal is ambitious. 100 Black Men of Syracuse is hosting “100 and Counting,” a free, lead testing event on Saturday, April 27 at the Syracuse Community Health’s new facilities at 930 So. Salina St., and we envision small children as young as 1 and 2 years old be tested that day for elevated levels of lead in their blood.

Our partnership with the Onondaga County Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, whose staff will conduct the tests on April 27, can mean the difference between children reaching their full potential or a lifetime marked by the irreversible effects of lead poisoning. Children older than 2 and up to 6 years old residing in Onondaga County who have never been tested are also eligible to be tested at our event.

To promote 100 and Counting, families will receive a gift card for each of their children tested, as well as one raffle ticket to enter a drawing for a $300 grand prize. Parents are strongly encouraged to complete the Onondaga County Health Department’s Child Lead Testing Inquiry Form by April 20. Lead education information will also be distributed, and Brady Farm will be present at the event to give away fresh produce.
