In past years, 100 Black Men of Syracuse, Inc., has invited the greater Syracuse community to join its members for a walk promoting healthy lifestyles and recognizing the legacy of the man who owned and operated the city’s first black pharmacy. Previous routes were held along city streets that began at Syracuse University’s Manley Field House and ended at Jubilee Park, inside Thornden Park and at Upper Onondaga Park. Now, the 100, with support from Crouse Hospital, is calling on the young and “young at heart” to share in the benefits of participating in the Winston Gaskin Community Walk for Wellness & Stroke Prevention’s first-ever trek along the scenic Onondaga Creekwalk on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016.
Registrations, including a $15 registration fee, will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. the day of the walk and in advance online. Participants will complete a 5.4-mile route that begins and ends at the creekwalk’s Armory Square Trailhead, across from the Museum of Science and Technology in downtown Syracuse. The creekwalk, which extends north to the base of Onondaga Lake, features some of the area’s most picturesque urban settings and landscaped scenery. To help participants prepare for the Gaskin Walk, 100 Black Men of Syracuse in cooperation with Pulse Fitness Studio, 713 W. Fayette Street, is sponsoring a series of 10 Zumba classes ($5 per class) from Aug. 14 until Sept. 14.
